Need A Closet Refresh? 7 Easy Organizing Tips To Instantly Transform Your Closet
There are many things you can do to make your closet look wonderful and be really functional without putting in a ton of effort. If you’re looking to refresh your closet without the hassle of a full overhaul, here are 7 easy tips you can implement to instantly transform your closet; little or no purchase necessary.
I have spent many hours in many closets. Some big, some small. Some needing a ton of love, others just a bit. This last week I was blessed with a project that put me in the closet for 3, 7 hour days. A little bit of solitude (this was a solo mission without my client) and a whole lotta hustle to get a closet in shape for a video session. No complaining here, I mean, it is my job after all. And I love it!! Transformations are the best!
While spending my time changing out hangers and folding jeans (Yes, I love doing this. Yes, some think that’s odd.) I was thinking about all the different ways you can transform your closet with really simple tasks.
There are many things you can do to make your closet look wonderful and be really functional without putting in a ton of effort.
Now, my philosophy is and always will be “You must go through all the phases of organization in order to have a completely organized space. Simplify, Organize, Transform.”
This doesn’t mean, “marie kondoing your house, getting rid of everything and now its all better.” No offense at all to Marie Kondo and her tidying methods, they are great. In fact, I’ve read her book multiple times and love the concept of sparking joy and keeping only what matters to you. What some of her followers miss however is, there is an entire process you must go through to have an organized space and keep it that way. It’s not just getting rid of your stuff. But I digress, more on this in a future post.
Even though I stand firm with my organization process, there are always ways to improve a space when you don’t have the time to fully do it all. Sometimes visual relief is all that is needed to give you an energy boost or the motivation to do more.
And, let’s be honest, a good tip, trick or hack is always fun to implement (especially when they work!).
If you’re looking to refresh your closet without the hassle of a full overhaul, here are 7 easy tips you can implement to instantly transform your closet; little or no purchase necessary.
Tip # 1 - Streamline Your Hangers
This is the only tip on the list that you may need to spend a bit of money on depending on what you have, but it’s definitely the biggest bang for your buck.
You’ve heard it before. You’ve seen the huggable hangers. Some love them, some are haters but the idea is to just make them all the same. All white plastic, all black velvet, all space saving plastic with rubber grippers.
Pick any hanger style you desire and change them all out to match. Not only will this instantly make your closet look better, you will also gain more space.
Pro Tip: I get my velvet hangers from Costco. Great value for the quantity and quality of the hangers.
Tip #2 - Hang Clothes The Same Direction
Our clothing has so many parts that contribute to bulk. Collars, buttons, waistbands, etc. automatically make clothes hang in an inconsistent way. By hanging everything all in the same direction, the interaction of all of these parts is minimized and the garments can then lay closer together.
For example: If you have 2 shirts with a collar facing one another, they push apart. Hang them in the same direction and they will lay close together. Seems silly when talking about two shirts looking at one another, but every little bit adds up throughout the entire closet.
Tip #3 - Hang Clothing On Hangers The Same Way
Similar to the above tip, hanging items such as pants the same way on each hanger will instantly clean up the look of your closet.
Do you hang some skirts on hangers with clips? Hang all your skirts on hangers with clips and clip them in the same spot of the garment.
Do you hang your jeans? Fold them in the same direction and hang all with the seams facing the same way on the same type of hanger. As you can see in the left image below, even though all of the pants are on the same hangers, they aren’t hanging well because they are not all folded and hung in the same manner. In the image on the right, all folded on the hanger the same way and are hung in the same direction.
Tip #4 - Use The MIddle Of The Hanger
This seems like a no brainer, but in every closet I go into I see hangers pointing in all directions because of items hanging on them in the back or the front. When hanging items such as scarves, pants, etc.. be sure to place them on the center of the hanger for balance. It will take away the chaos of hangers going in all directions and it will prevent the clothing from being wrinkled as well.
In the image below, you can see how straight the jeans hang because they are all on the center of the hanger.
Tip #5 - Categorize
Another super simple way to streamline your closet without much effort is to categorize and put like with like; all tank tops together, all short sleeves together, all skirts together and so on. I created a closet category guide to help you with this. Check it out here or click the link below.
Tip #6 - Add The Rainbow
Step up your closet game and create a more eye pleasing space by separating your categories into color. Create an easy grab and go system by starting with white, then work your way through the ROYGBIV scale (I end with black and brown). Do this with each category. White to black tanks, white to black short sleeves, etc.. Need a black tank? You’ll be able to see it before you even reach for it.
Tip #7 - Place Seam On The Hanger Line
Take an extra second or two for each item you hang to make sure the seam is on the hanger line. Another no brainer right? Not so much. I mean, let’s be honest, hanging clothes after laundry isn’t the most exciting thing in the world and we just want to get it done already. Put it on the hanger, hang it up.
This is where all those annoying ‘hanger bumps’ we all dislike surface. When the seam of your garment isn’t on the hanger line, it can create lines or bumps where it sits. This can’t be done with every item due to some styles, however, you will greatly minimize those bumps and lines just by paying a bit of attention to this one little step.
Bonus tip - Use The Right Hanger For Your Garments
It’s super easy to slide a belt onto the top hook of a hanger or just hang some ties over the bottom of one to get them put away really quick, but guess what? They don’t stay balanced and things fall off. This is not going to help the closet chaos situation.
Be sure to use the proper hangers for your garments. Belt hangers or racks for belts, tie racks for ties, bag hooks for bags (using a regular hanger for these can sometimes damage the handles), etc... You can grab this awesome tie rack here!
